“Collaboratory” is a new term used to describe a networked organizational form that makes breakthrough achievement possible. It is evolutionary, adaptive, human- centered, peer-to-peer, based on trust, and sustained by a large component of mutual self-interest. As an organization it is tasked with bringing together people, organizations, businesses, government, information and tools—across a wide array of geography, demography and opinion—to solve all of the major social problems in Southwest Florida on an eighteen-year deadline.

Though the term, “collaboratory” itself didn’t exist at the time, in many ways, the organizational form that is NASA and its thousands of partners fits the definition perfectly and the visual identity for Collaboratory draws inspiration directly from this. It is a visual expression of all of the social problems that they have set out to solve and the people, ideas, resources, disciplines, technology, strengths, tenacity and creativity that they will bring together to do it.
